Yesterday the North Carolina Tar Heels and Illinois Fighting Illini agreed to terms for a home-and-home series that will begin for the 2015 season. The Tar Heels will host Illinois in 2015, but will travel to Illinois in 2016.
“Coach Fedora and I have been in discussions for several months about our future non-conference football opponents. We both felt Illinois would be an attractive matchup for both schools and would be a tremendous experience and opportunity for our student-athletes, staff and fans,” said North Carolina Athletic Director Bubba Cunningham in a statement on GoHeels.com. “This series is an opportunity to bring a quality Big Ten program to Chapel Hill, while also providing a unique travel experience for our student-athletes.”
The two teams have not met each other since 1987 when North Carolina had a 27-0 blowout over Illinois. North Carolina also won the only other meeting between the two schools and holds a 2-0 record over the Illini.
Fedora and Cunningham are working on building their non-conference schedules for 2015 and beyond as 2014 seems practically set. North Carolina will play Liberty, San Diego State, East Carolina, and Notre Dame next season.
Besides Illinois, South Carolina is the only scheduled and known opponent for North Carolina in 2015. Any discussion and leads as for who the two other non-conference games would be against is unknown at this time.
