UNC Football vs Georgia Tech: Key Players for the Tar Heels

Facing a team who can score like Georgia Tech is a major task by itself but if their play-makers get going, that task becomes a much more difficult. For Carolina to come home with a victory, their key players on both sides of the ball will have to show up early and often.

It’s pretty simple for the Tar Heels: score, score and score some more. The offense has not been as crisp as expected, so there’s no better time than the present for quarterback Bryn Renner and the boys to break out. The Renner led offense will have to put up 30 or 40 points maybe more to win this contest, with that being said time of possession will be huge in this one. The Heels must have a couple of long drives to keep the Georgia Tech offense of the field and we all know the best way to do that is with an effective running game.

Enter running back Romar Morris. If he can gain 100 yards or more rushing that will keep the Yellow Jackets “O” on the sidelines and UNC’s chances of winning greatly increases. A good ground game would definitely cause Tech’s defense problems, a unit that is the weakness of their squad.

Now I could talk about what the Heels must do on offense until I’m Carolina Blue in the face, but we all know how the “D” plays will determine the outcome of this game. The UNC defense cannot allow Georgia Tech quarterback Vad Lee to take over this game. The Durham, North Carolina native is dual threat but at this point he’s a much more effective runner and that why the visitors must make him beat them by passing. Carolina defensive tackle Tim Jackson needs to have a major impact, he will have to live in the home team’s backfield. If he and his buddies on the d-line can hold their own and get penetration from time to time, the Yellow Jackets triple option will become a little easier to defend.

Junior linebacker Norkeithus Otis will be counted on as well. Otis will need to provide a pass rush for the Heels and if he can get after Lee as well as remain discipline on the option plays, that will mean good things for UNC. The guy who really needs to play a great game is Senior safety Tre Boston. His play making ability will have to be on display in Atlanta. Boston will be asked to help out with the run and when the Yellow Jackets go for the “home run” plays, he will need play a discipline center field and refrain from biting on play fakes.

Bottom line if Carolina can win the time of possession battle, get a timely stop or two and the stars play like stars, a “W” is very obtainable!
