A year ago over 100 points were scored, over 1000 yards were produced, and conference records were crushed when the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (2-0; 1-0 ACC) took on the North Carolina Tar Heels (1-1; 0-0 ACC) in Chapel Hill for a game that changed the Coastal Division Championship outcome. It put the Yellow Jackets in contention to win the Coastal Division and then gave them a chance to play for the ACC Championship.
This year the Tar Heels look to not only reverse last year’s results, but send a message that they are true contenders in the ACC and that last season’s “so-called” division champions weren’t a fluke.
It will be tough for North Carolina as Georgia Tech ranks 3rd in rushing yards in the nation and has only had an average of 7 points scored against them early on this season (14 total, both from Duke), but North Carolina will be their first true and tough test of the season. That triple option of the Yellow Jackets has given so many teams a fit, and with North Carolina still working out kinks, it could truly push North Carolina to the limit.
The key for North Carolina is to establish the fact that Georgia Tech will have to rely on receiving and stop their rushing attack. The Tar Heels have struggled against the running attacks and even at times have struggled in the secondary. This season both sides of their defense have had their issues and with the bye week before a tough game, you have to think Fedora has prepared his team for this Southern showdown.
Kickoff is at Noon tomorrow and you can catch the game on the ESPN Network, so be sure to set your DVR if you can’t catch it because there is some high expectations for both teams tomorrow to repeat one of the best football games from last season.
