After staying hidden from the public eye since the saga begun, Haydn “Fats” Thomas has been seen and was questions last night by ABC 11 (Raleigh’s local ABC affiliate). Thomas has been accused of renting expensive and fancy rental vehicles to PJ Hairston; vehicles that have been involved in numerous parking and speeding citations over the summer.
This story began early this summer when UNC’s leading scorer PJ Hairston was arrested in Durham and charged with possession of marijuana and driving without a license. However, both charges were dropped eventually just days before he would then be pulled over again and charged with reckless driving (going 93 miles per hour in a 65 miles per hour zone).
Thomas and Hairston have been in constant denial of car rental deals with each other and even at some point denied even knowing each other. Obviously this is not the case as evidence has proven both have known each other and have been in touch with each other via rental car agreements.
Hairston was suspended indefinitely at the end of July by head basketball coach Roy Williams, but he did say that he would get to play this season but when he will play is still a mystery. That was later confirmed by UNC athletic director Bubba Cunningham.
The events of the summer involving Hairston have led to mixed reactions from UNC fans. Many fans stand behind Hairston and think he shouldn’t even have been punish. Others stand behind him, but feel the punishment wasn’t strong enough while hoping he can keep himself out of trouble.
With the suspension length unknown to the public, fans will continue to hope Hairston stays out of trouble and returns before the Tar Heels begin to get deep in their schedule that has many tough challenges.
