The South Carolina Gamecocks have won thirteen consecutive season opening games. Those games go all the way back to the 2000 season. Their head coach, Steve Spurrier, is 22-1 all time as a head coach in season opening games.
While the Tar Heels have the all-time advantage over the Gamecocks with a 34-17-4 record, the Gamecocks defeated them in their last meeting which was in 2007, 21-15.
Despite being one of the power houses out of the SEC in recent years, Steve Spurrier has made it clear to all his fans that while he coaches the sixth ranked team in the country, the North Carolina Tar Heels could truly give his team a challenge and end up winning their season opener in Columbia.
“They can beat us, yeah, we know they can beat us,” Spurrier said of UNC. “Vanderbilt can beat us. Shoot, almost every team we play can come in here and beat us. They play very well, we don’t take care of the ball. Somehow or another, they don’t have to throw too much, a lot of stuff can happen in football. We know we have to be ready.” (Source: Willie T. No doubt the online chat boards have been full of trash talk thus far and the Gamecock fan base is very confident. However, their fearless leader has made it clear just because they’re ranked doesn’t mean they cannot be beaten.
The season opening game between the Carolinas on Thursday night has a ton of hype behind it and is getting a ton of attention. South Carolina looks to defend it’s pre-season ranking, but North Carolina looks to prove they deserve to be ranked. South Carolina is the obvious favorite with North Carolina being the underdog.
One thing we know for sure already, Thursday night is going to be one heck of a way to kick off the 2013 college football season!
