After all rumors speculated and fingers pointed that AJ Blue would be the starting running back for head coach Larry Fedora and the North Carolina Tar Heels, fans were given some stunning (but welcomed) news.
Coach Fedora has named Romar Morris as the starting running back and will take first team reps from here on out and when the Tar Heels take on the South Carolina Gamecocks.
No discredit to Blue, who is one of the most talented backs in the ACC, Coach Fedora has kept his eye on all four of his running backs and had this to say about the decision:
“Yeah, I would say right now if we went today, Romar would be the guy.”
Blue has been battling some minor bumps and bruises he has sustained over the summer camp and Morris has being showing healthy but speedy and athletic reps during camp. However, Blue is still expected to get some serious playing time just behind Morris against South Carolina next week.
Morris had this to say about earning the first string job:
“It (earning the starting job) is just an opportunity every day to come out here and work, whether A.J. plays right now or not. But A.J., he’s going to get in the game regardless. The freshmen are going to get in there too,” Morris said. “The way our rotation is, two or three backs can’t play by themselves. Everybody has to play in this offense.”
Both players showed potential last season when playing behind Giovani Bernard, and both players are very well capable of being the starting back. If things don’t go as Coach Fedora expects, you can expect him to change this lineup and rotation around some. You may even see freshman athlete Ryan Switzer take some reps behind Bryn Renner!
