COMMENTARY | News broke this morning that South Carolina Gamecocks star defensive end Jadeveon Clowney, might not play in the first game against the North Carolina Tar Heels.
Now, when I first heard about this, I assumed it was because of some sort of NCAA allegations towards him, like a few weeks ago there was a report that Clowney spoke with an agent, Jay-Z to be specific according to these reports.
Instead, it was because of a “nagging shoulder” injury that might keep Clowney out of the game. Here is what Head Coach Steve Spurrier had to say about his team after practice, mentioning Clowney and other nagging injuries the Gamecocks are dealing with.
Spurrier mentioned that Wide Receiver Bruce Ellington might have to sit out, along with fellow wide out Damiere Byrd.
Notice how Steve Spurrier just threw in Jadeveon Clowney’s name in last, right before he was walking away. He just basically says, uh, hey, Clowney might not play either…his shoulder is hurting him.
I am not doubting the possibility Clowney might in fact have a bruised shoulder, but if it was more serious, it would have been mentioned first not last.
Let’s say its the NBA season and Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra is about to do an interview right after practice and LeBron James has a nagging ankle injury. If that ankle injury is so important, it will be one of the first things that comes out of his mouth, why? Because Lebron is the best player on the team, and the Heat desperately need him on the court.
In that interview, Spoelstra isn’t going to say “Well, it was a good practice, we have some nagging injuries, Norris Cole and Chris Anderson have some nagging injuries and might not play, and oh yeah…LeBron might not play either.” LeBron’s name would’ve been mentioned first, not thrown in at the last minute.
Do not fall for Steve Spurrier’s trick, he is playing mind games with you. Opening night is an important game not only for the Gamecocks and Tar Heels, but for Jadeveon Clowney’s “Heisman Race.” Clowney is a pre-season heisman candidate, even while being a defensive player. Texas A&M Quarterback Johnny Manziel might be ruled out for the entire season for gaining profits off giving autographs.
Jadeveon Clowney will play if he is able to, he will not sit out the game for “precautionary measures.” He wants to win, and to win himself a Heisman Trophy, and to be a possible Number 1 overall draft pick in next years NFL Draft.
The Gamecocks are aiming for a SEC Championship this season, and a bid for the National Championship game, they will do everything in their power to make sure Clowney can get on the field. Unless Clowney’s injury becomes serious, expect Jadeveon Clowney to play August 29th against the Tar Heels.
