Every summer while we follow our beloved Tar Heel basketball team, and the individuals that are a part of it, through summer workouts, we try and make an accurate assessment of actually how everyone is progressing without actually getting to see them work out or practice.
Fortunately for us fans, the month of July always gives us an avenue to get around that and that avenue is the NC Pro Am. This year’s event actually kicked off this past Thursday and several Tar Heels, both current and former, are participating.
Out of the three ACC schools in the triangle, UNC has the least amount of current participants. Only Leslie McDonald, PJ Hairston, JP Tokoto and newcomer Isaiah Hicks have registered to play. McDonald, Tokoto and Hicks will be joined on their former teammate Reggie Bullock on their team that’s predominately made up of amateur players.
Hairston, for whatever reason, ended up on a separate roster from the rest of his teammates, but will get a chance to play with Raymond Felton and John Henson on a stacked team that also includes a bevy of past ACC talent such as Kyrie Irving, Chris Wilcox and both Miles and Mason Plumlee. Other former Tar Heels playing in the event are Jerry Stackhouse and Rasheed Wallace who are both mainstays at the event.
This annual event is always a crowd favorite and should give fans an idea on how the players are improving. It will certainly be interesting to see Isaiah Hicks go up against some top competition on a day to day basis whether it’s against the pros playing or Duke’s star freshman Jabari Parker.
Stats have not come available from Thursday’s games, but we will keep you posted when they do. Should be interesting to see how the players perform.
