Lets say starting Quarterback Bryn Renner gets hurt on the opening play of the season, or he might happen to be on someone’s Purge list. Hopefully none of that is true. But if Renner does in fact get hurt, who would take his place? That’s where the overall point of this article comes in. Marquise Williams will come in handy if that situation occurs. For a while there, Marquise was not even enrolled at UNC. In mid May though, Marquise was back in school at Chapel Hill. Head Coach Larry Fedora had to breathe a sigh of relief. Fedora has other options at backup, but none of them have experience like Williams.
Next year when Bryn Renner graduates, someone will have to replace him. More than likely, that player will be Marquise Williams. Marquise is a former 4 star recruit out of high school. He is no scrub to say the least. He’s got talent, and can definitely play. He’s got a bright future, but what will he do this season.
In limited opportunities last season, soon to be red-shirt Sophomore Marquise Williams was pretty impressive. In 17 passing attempts, he had 127 yards, 1 TD, and zero interceptions. The more impressive category was his rushing. He had 3 rushing touchdowns, and 186 yards, averaging 6.4 yards per carry. Yes, a lot of those stats were in garbage time, blowout games against weaker opponents, such as Elon and Idaho. Williams basically only played whenever Renner had a minor injury that took him out for a few plays.
Marquise had very limited playing time, but he showed he has the talent and skill to put up big numbers, and lead the Tar Heels to wins. Marquise Williams has the ability to pass, and scramble for a first down if no one is open. Multi-dimensional quarterbacks are taking over Football. He fits in very well with Head Coach Larry Fedora’s fast paced offense. Whenever Marquise is given an opportunity to play this season, and in future seasons to come. Expect him to succeed.
