Well you can’t spell National Champions without NC, and the UNC Women’s Lacrosse team made sure of that this year. They defeated ACC rivals, Maryland, to win this year’s NCAA Women’s Lacrosse National Championship.
In a game that went into triple overtime and lasted over seventy-minutes, the Tar Heels stole the game away in the final seventeen seconds of the long and tiring game to earn the 2013 NCAA National Championship.
Sammy Jo Tracy tossed in the game winning goal that sealed the fate of the Maryland Terrapins; 13-12
“A dream — it literally feels all like a dream,” she said. “To see that ball go in the back of the net was something I’ve dreamed about ever since my dad put a stick in my hand.”
Megan Ward (Goalie) made a very important save that led to the winning goal. When she made the save, she cleared the field and passed to Brittney Coppa. Coppa then tipped the ball over to Tracy who made the score.
The Tar Heels have now tied the record for most wins in a season for the third time. The record was set in 2002, met again in 2010, and in 2013, met for a third time.
