Early Sunday afternoon, CBS Sports (via Jeff Goodman) had reported that sources confirmed PJ Hairston’s decision to return to Chapel Hill for his junior season. Those reports were quickly denied by his family shortly after they were initially shared online.
Hairston, Reggie Bullock, and James Michael McAdoo are all three debating whether to return to school in the fall or jump the ship early and join the NBA. Hairston is the most NBA-ready player on the Tar Heels squad this season, but McAdoo is the only one projected to be a first round draft pick.
When the news of Hairston’s decision to return to UNC this fall hit Twitter, a sigh of relief could be heard through-out the homes of Tar Heel fans. Then came the comments from his mother, Wendy Poteat, who says an announcement on his decision will be made via the university and that she nor PJ knew he would be returning or not just yet.
“We are still in the process and once the decision is made it will be announced by UNC. I’m not exactly [sure] who the source is,” she said. “It was not P.J. It was not myself. Those are the two most important people. … I’d like to find out who knows more about my son than I do.”
Odds are, if Hairston returns, so does Bullock. Their decisions could be one of the factors that is keeping Andrew Wiggins from making his decision on where he will play college basketball.
With anxiety levels running high again in Tar Heel nation, it is a matter of a week and a half before we officially know who does and doesn’t return to Chapel Hill this fall.
