Overcooked Rice: Rutgers Should Fire Mike Rice

COMMENTARY: Yesterday the internet exploded after a video went viral showing Rutgers University head basketball coach Mike Rice abusing his players. My instant reaction was simply my jaw dropping to the floor. It’s a rather sad video actually and if you haven’t seen it, I’ll include it at the conclusion of this commentary.

Rice was seen in the video hitting players, kicking players, throwing balls at players, cursing at them among other things.

Earlier this season Rice was on the hot seat for similar actions and reports. The school’s disciplinary action towards Rice? A three game suspension and a fine. Really? Yes, really.

Now he’s at it again, and this time it only makes the case for the school to fire Rice. The first time this incident came about this season, he should have been fired. Rutgers was rather nice about it all and gave him a second chance. Now it’s time for Rice to get the boot.

There is absolutely no excuse for a coach to be behaving this way, especially his own players for that matter. A coach is a leader, teacher, mentor, and counselor above many other things. Rice is a perfect example of what a coach is not and should not be!

I’d be embarrassed as a fan, writer, and any other way I am associated with a school if this happened to my school. If this had ever happened with Roy Williams or Larry Fedora, I’d expect them to be fired and I’d stand behind the schools decision. Nor would I support them coming back as a coach at the University of North Carolina.

However, Rutgers apparently endorses this barbaric and cruel behavior as they didn’t fire Rice the first time he was reported acted as such. Will they finally fire him now that a second occurrence has come about? We’ll see!

This is kind of behavior is ridiculous to be honest and should not be tolerated at all. These are kids learning to make their way through the ranks of basketball with the dreams of one day being a professional player in the National Basketball Association. And because they didn’t make a basket or do a drill correctly you feel obliged to shoved them and hurt them?

It’s time for Rutgers to take their trash out!
