Roy Williams won his 700th game in round 2 of the NCAA Tournament in a win over Villanova. Roy became the fastest head coach to hit the 700 mark in just 879 games. Roy now moves on and will go for #701 against his former team the Kansas Jayhawks on Sunday.
But don’t tell Roy about #700, he never mentioned it and when Reggie Bullock wrote the number on the big board after Roy wrote 32 on the board to represent the number of teams left in the tourney. The players presented Roy with a North Carolina #700 jersey in honor of coach’s great achievement.
Roy didn’t get his 700th the easy way as the Tar Heels lost a 20 point lead and let Villanova hang around late in the second half before sealing the victory in the final minutes. Getting 700 wasn’t easy, number 701 may have to wait until next season with top seeded Kansas waiting.
“I want to get 800,” Williams said. “I’d like to 900, 1000, 1,500. I know that’s not going to happen. My focus was not on that. It was trying to get 25 and get this team to stay and play another game.”
