The Diamond Heels returned to Chapel Hill today after sweeping the Astros College Classic in dominant fashion. The Heels outscored Rice, California, and Texas A&M by a combined score of 27-8. Landon Lassiter, Michael Russell and Kent Emanuel took home all tournament offers.
The Tar Heels continue to run through their competition and are currently sitting at 10-0 and still hold their #1 ranking that they were awarded at the beginning of the season. Mike Fox is getting great production from not only his returning stars, but from his freshmen and bench players as well. Players are getting on base and finding gaps in the field which has led to big scoring innings and lopsided victories. So far, the lineup has scored 97 runs which puts their mark at 9.7 a game and gives opposing pitchers an ERA over 9. The power hasn’t shown up for this team yet as they only have one recorded home run from Grayson Atwood, but with the team batting .334, lack of power has been a largely irrelevant issue.
The pitching has been stellar as well. The team has a cumulative ERA of 2.05 over the course of the first 10 games and Emanuel has led the way with a 0.78 ERA over 3 starts. The bullpen has been just as dominant as the starters have and currently boast 15 surrendered earned runs. It has to be comforting for a coaching staff to know that if one his starters gets rattled in a game, that their bullpen is every bit as dangerous if not more so.
The Heels return to action, tomorrow at 3 when they host the Davidson Wildcats in Chapel Hill.
