Mike Mayock Lists UNC Guard Jonathan Cooper as One of Four Options for Chiefs with #1 Pick

NFL Draft “expert” Mike Mayock of the NFL Network says only four legitimate options exist for the Kansas City Chiefs with the #1 overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft.  One being offensive guard Jonathan Cooper of the North Carolina Tar Heels.

The four players Mayock listed are:

Alabama guard Chance Warmack; North Carolina guard Jonathan Cooper; Texas A&M tackle Luke Joeckel; and Central Michigan tackle Eric Fisher.

Warmack is Mayock’s preference.  “People will tell me I’m crazy, that a guard can’t go No. 1,” Mayock explained.  “I think he’s the best player in the draft, so I would argue that.”

This is shocking to me on many accounts.  Horrible luck for the Chiefs as Arrowhead Addicts Patrick Allen explains HERE.  Next, I just can’t see a guard going #1 overall whether it’s Warmack or Cooper, it just doesn’t make sense.  Guards are very important as new Chiefs head coach Andy Reid found out in Philadelphia but #1 overall?  I’m not buying it.

Cooper is an excellent pro prospect who will start from Day 1 on whatever team chooses him and is listed as a top 15 pick on most mock drafts.  This is the first time any expert has listed him as a possibility for the #1 overall pick in the draft.  One thing that could help the chances of Cooper and the other three OL listed by Mayock would be the Chiefs landing a veteran quarterback such as Alex Smith who played well behind a very good OL in San Francisco.
