One of the hottest topics on the Keeping It Heel message boards is when will 2014 five star shooting guard Rashad Vaughn and why hasn’t he been offered yet? It looks like answers may be right around the corner.
Vaughn scored 51 points in front of Carolina assistant coach C.B. McGrath and head coach Roy Williams went to watch him on January 5th but had to board a plane and didn’t have time to talk with Vaughn after the game. Vaughn currently has offers from Iowa State, Kentucky, Louisville, Tennessee, Maryland, Kansas, Florida, Syracuse and hometown Minnesota.
Vaughn was quoted as saying that he intended on speaking with Roy soon after his most recent visit and that Roy was supposed to offer him but had to leave. While a large portion of Tar Heel fans have grown restless waiting on an offer for Vaughn if you pay attention to the relationship between the player and program an offer looks to be a mere formality.
Roy Williams is not the kind of coach who makes a scholarship offer via phone or text message, he’s not going to make it during a five minute conversation after a game in a players gym either. Roy wants time to sit down with the player and his parents to make a formal offer.
UNC is considered a favorite for Vaughns services once an offer is made. Currently the Heels have made offers to SG Theo Pinson, Justin Jackson and Justise Winslow. The 2014 class will offer a chance for perimeter freshman to play and perhaps start immediately. The only players from the current roster set to be around then are J.P. Tokoto who will be a junior and P.J. Hairston if he stays for his senior year which is something I doubt happens after Roy is forced to play him big minutes next season.
Look for Roy to make his move Friday and offer Vaughn formally.
