Consensus five star prospect power forward Trey Lyles of Indianapolis, IN the #5 rated overall player in the 2014 class is planning to visit Chapel Hill. Lyles is a favorite of UNC fans and Tar Heel Nation has been begging for an offer to Lyles for quite sometime and now that a visit is on the horizon the question is, is Trey Lyles to UNC really a good idea?
The knee jerk reaction is to scream yes! Of course it is, Lyles is a perfect fit in Carolina’s system, his affection for the program is well documented and why not go after a top five player? If you ask me it’s just not that simple. Yes Lyles is a fantastic player and normally I would agree with the consensus here and say go for it but just not in this class.
Scholarships are the salary cap of college athletics and UNC is not Kentucky; Roy Williams does not have a renewal of his annual allotment like Jon Calipari. Building the Tar Heels roster takings planning on Roy’s part over the course of several recruiting classes and he needs to take into account several variables, which players are likely to leave early, when certain players will be ready to step into larger roles and how these constantly moving parts will fit together.
Taking into account the potential layout of the roster in 2014 the Tar Heels will be rich at point guard and interior positions with a big need on the perimeter. Freshman Joel James and Brice Johnson have great potential but I can’t see anybody telling you with a straight face that they won’t be around for their junior seasons combine that with incoming freshman Isiah Hicks and Kennedy Meeks not to mention Desmond Hubert and Jackson Simmons and the Heels really don’t need a big man in 2014.
With five big men already slated to take up scholarships in 2014 and three point guards UNC needs the other scholarships for the perimeter. Trey Lyles would be nice but it just doesn’t seem very feasible to me.
