Larry Fedora has secured another recruit today in defensive end Marquis Haynes. Marquis Haynes is a Florida native from Jacksonville standing tall at 6’3 and 215 pounds. Marquis Haynes is a dual position recruit where he excelled at defensive end as well as tight end for his high school. Haynes is the fourth defensive end in Fedora’s class along with Nazair Jones, Dajuan Drennon, and Mikey Bart.
UNC assistant Dan Disch helped secure the commitment from Marquis even after he was previously committed to Coach Charlie Strong’s Louisville Cardinals. Haynes previously committed to the Cardinals back in May but was never really convinced while he stayed in contact with various other programs. Marquis’ final list consisted of local schools in Florida Atlantic and Florida International, UNC, and Louisville.
After being committed to Louisville Haynes visited camp at UNC in the June and committed soon after. Marquis loved the atmosphere and what Coach Fedora had envisioned for the future of the program and wanted to be apart of it. Marquis took an official visit January 18th and even took an official to Florida Atlantic the week before. In the end his his heart had him at North Carolina.
Signing at his high school Marquis Haynes is happy wearing Tar Heel blue in the future. Haynes will join another Jacksonville native freshman linebacker Shakeel Rashad in Chapel Hill. Haynes will have lots of competition at the position but his penetration and pursuit abilities are unmatched. His offensive capabilities are also of notice to the staff and look for him to be used at tight end instead.
