Three star Cornerback Desmond Lawrence of Charlotte, NC has signed his letter of intent to play college football for the North Carolina Tar Heels.
Lawrence chose to play for Larry Fedora at UNC over Notre Dame, Kentucky, Duke, North Carolina State, Clemson, Virginia, USC and South Carolina also extended scholarship offers
“They have everything I want. It’s a great environment and with the education you get there, it’s the full-package.” goupstate.com
Lawrence committed to Carolina in April and all of his visits have been to Chapel Hill despite the fact that he was offered by many top of the top programs in the nation.
Lawrence is known for his size as a tall six foot corner with athleticism who can help out as a return man if needed, some question whether he fits in better as a corner or safety as the next level. Good range and ball skills; like many young corners he needs work on the fundamentals such as footwork. He was one of eight Tar Heel verbal commits ranked in the top 30 in the state of North Carolina.
This makes 11 signees for North Carolina? Lawrence is one of two CBs in the 2013 class for UNC and four defensive backs (if you include soft commit Korrin Wiggins who will announce his decision today) joining Lawrence are four star CB Brian Walker and preferred walk-on Justin Fieulleteau brother of three star wide receiver Jordan. The Tar Heels will bring back their entire starting defensive backfield, a group that will look to build on a season in which the defense as a whole, especially the pass defense at times struggled.
If any freshman DB is going to make an immediate impact on this team it’s Walker and with the entire secondary returning this year Lawrence will likely have to battle with returning defensive back ups for a role on special teams.
