We learned today that Marquise Williams is not enrolled for spring classes at UNC and may return to the football team this fall according to head coach Larry Fedora. What bothers me more about this story is the immediate reaction from fans that follow the team in the off season. For whatever reason Marquise Williams is not at school and the first thing that is brought up is how it affects the football team and he must have seen the writing on the wall with the competition around him. Marquise Williams is a Tar Heel and getting his life in order is more important than how many snaps he will take this spring.
Marquise Williams came to UNC as the best dual threat quarterback in his class, but Bryn Renner even with change to a offense most thought was better suited for Williams has held a tight reign on the starting job. Things probably have not gone as planned for the young redshirt freshman and this is where he needs the guidance of Coach Fedora more than he ever will in the fourth quarter of a tight game. The next few months could dictate the rest of this young man’s life and I want to see appositive outcome from this story.
Too many times young athletes take time away from school only to get in trouble or never make it back. I have seen too many players leave for different reasons never to return. Marquise Williams hopefully can get whatever has him away from UNC in order to return to the North Carolina football team not to lead the offense on touchdown drives, but to one day see him put on the best uniform at UNC: a cap and gown.
