Lucas: Defensive Balance
Dexter Strickland guarded Erick Green for 22 halfcourt possessions (Green was 1-for-5 against him). McDonald had 19 defensive halfcourt possessions against Green and limited him to 1-for-7. Marcus Paige drew the assignment on 10 possessions and saw Green go 1-for-1. Reggie Bullock actually had the fewest possessions against Green, with just nine, but he held him to 0-for-3. Pedigree, depth prevail as North Carolina defeats Virginia Tech
From tradition to talent to depth, there’s no comparing the basketball programs at Virginia Tech and North Carolina. But for two-plus hours Saturday afternoon, the Hokies and Tar Heels looked as similar as John and Jim Harbaugh. But in overtime, pedigree prevailed. North Carolina 72, Virginia Tech 60. Tar Heels thwart Hokies’ Green with solid defensive effort
It was UNC walk-on guard Wade Moody who had to play the role of the Hokies’ high-scoring guard Erick Green in practice. His biggest contribution was constantly driving on the Tar Heels’ regulars in an attempt to draw contact, forcing them to play defense without fouling. That proved useful as, for the first time this season, Green did not get to the free throw line. (Fayetteville Observer)

UNC Basketball: Tar Heels Outlast Virginia Tech 72-60 In OT
North Carolina returned home against Virginia Tech needed to take home the victory before two consecutive tough road games against Duke and Miami. It took overtime to take down the Hokies and UNC got a much needed victory in conference play (KIH)

UNC-Virginia Tech Postgame Notes
Freshman point guard Marcus Paige scored a season-high 19 points, handed out five assists and tied his season-high with five rebounds. Sophomore forward James Michael McAdoo led all scorers on both teams with 22 points and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds. It was his third consecutive double-double, fourth in the last five games and eighth of the season. (GoHeels.com)

UNC moves past Hokies in overtime
UNC didn’t get off to its best start Saturday afternoon against Virginia Tech but managed to win in overtime 72-60 to secure their fifth ACC victory of the season. The story of the game, aside from UNC’s slow start was UNC’s ability to slow down Virginia Tech’s Erick Green. Green came into the game as the NCAA’s leading scorer. He was held to just 16 points.
