A prayer for Dean Smith

Chancellor Holden Thorp said he believes the University is in good shape
Despite the recent scandals UNC has faced, including those that contributed to his decision to resign, Chancellor Holden Thorp believes it’s still in good shape. Thorp gave a state of the University address at Tuesday’s Student Congress meeting, detailing the factors that shape his positive view of the University, addressing challenges UNC has faced in recent years, and responding to students’ questions. Hoopsbag: North Carolina edition
Although Marcus Paige is still struggling with his shot — he’s only 4-for-22 over UNC’s last three wins — the starting point guard is looking more comfortable with the Tar Heels’ pace, and where to get his teammates the ball. He still makes mistakes, and is still a work in progress, but it’s nice to see that he’s making progress, especially at that position. (ESPN.com)

Tar Heels No. 1 In Baseball America Poll
Baseball America released its annual preseason top 25 on Thursday and North Carolina will open as the publication’s top team in 2013. The top overall ranking by Baseball America is the first-ever for the Tar Heels. Carolina leads four Atlantic Coast Conference teams in the initial rankings with NC State checking in at No. 8, Georgia Tech at No. 16 and Florida State at No. 20. (GoHeels.com)

Reports: Purdue Hires John Shoop as Offensive Coordinator
According to reports, Purdue has hired John Shoop as its new offensive coordinator. Shoop coordinated some decent offenses at North Carolina toward the end of his tenure as Tar Heels’ offensive coordinator (2007-2010). Players like quarterback T.J. Yates and wide receiver Hakeem Nicks developed nicely under his watch in Chapel Hill. (ESPN.com)

At 27, Daniel Bard, the lanky right-hander with the explosive fastball is entering the prime of his career. As he approaches his fifth big league season, he brings a positive mindset and clarity of purpose, both of which were in short supply last year. (Boston Herald)

UNC Football Recruiting: Larry Fedora Visits Da’Shawn Hand
North Carolina’s head coach Larry Fedora visited 2014 recruit Da’Shawn Hand yesterday. Hand out of Woodbridge, VA tweeted his top five college choices on January 8th and included the North Carolina Tar Heels among Alabama, Michigan, South Carolina and Virginia Tech. (KIH)

Justise Winslow Cuts List Includes UNC In Top 10
2014 SF Justise Winslow 6-6, 210 of Houston, TX has cut his list of potential college programs down to ten. Winslow lists North Carolina, Duke, Texas A&M, Kansas, Florida, Baylor, Stanford, Arizona, UCLA and Houston as potential destinations. (KIH)
