Well the Leslie McDonald case has gone from bad to worse. The junior guard has been suspended by Coach Roy Williams due to failing to uphold certain expectations, that aren’t athletically related, as a student-athlete. Leslie missed the last three games due to a tweaked knee and was finally medically cleared to return this week. It’s unsure whether or not he would have dressed for tonight’s Georgia Tech game if he were eligible, but this point is now moot.
As it stands, Leslie will be eligible return, by team standards, for the Virginia Tech game next weekend. His absence of course hurts the Tar Heels from a depth stand point and without him, Carolina lacks one of their most consistent perimeter shooters. Leslie is currently the team’s fifth leading scorer.
Roy Williams issued a statement to www.goheels.com on the issue: “Leslie did not do what we expect of our student-athletes and therefore is not going to play in the next three games,” said Williams. “His knee has improved and he would have been medically able to return this week, but he won’t dress for Georgia Tech, NC State and Boston College. I’m disappointed for him and our team because he worked so hard to get back from his knee injury and has been a valuable contributor for us this season. He’s a good kid and we look forward to his return.”
This is an unfortunate circumstance for a Tar Heels team that has seemingly had enough adversity thrown their way, but I have faith that this team will continue to band together and overcome this setback. We look forward to Leslie’s return next weekend and are thankful that his knee injury is no longer serious.
We will continue to update McDonald’s progress on Keeping it Heel.
