I’ve been a fan of the North Carolina Tar Heels for over 20 years now and every single time whether I’m in the stands or sitting on my couch watching the game right before tip off when the majority of fans are on their feet and the camera scans the crowd and you see the excitement of the students, alumni and fans cheering for their team with excitement on their faces I get that feeling. The feeling I got Christmas morning as a young child, the feeling you get when you know something big is about to happen and now that I”m on the wrong side of 30, I know it as the feeling that only Carolina basketball can give me.
This season has been trying at times, the lopsided losses to Indiana, Butler and Texas, starting 0-2 in the ACC with losses to Virginia and Miami and the countless times we’ve held our breath while this team stumbles to hold onto a lead or play tough for 40 minutes. The performance in the first half Saturday against Maryland reminded me just how special UNC basketball can really be and maybe more importantly it showed everyone how good this team can be if they can only sustain the type of energy and enthusiasm they showed.
This one is for all the naysayers out there, I know some of you are fans of the program and I understand like I said times have been tough this season but I want all of you to take a moment on Wednesday before the game, look at the sea of Carolina blue in the crowd, take a deep breath and remember how special this program really is.
