Duke Loses #1 Spot in This Week’s Rankings, UNC Still Has a Long Ways to Go

Duke dropped their first game of the season falling to 15-1 on the year and dropped from their #1 ranking down to 3rd in this week’s new Top 25 poll.  In a divided poll each of the top five teams received at least one vote for the #1 spot.  In the end future ACC conference program Louisville tops the charts with 36 first place votes.

As for UNC, they put together a nice win at Florida State but that wasn’t nearly enough to get them back in the national rankings at 11-5 and 1-2 in the conference the Tar Heels still have a long ways to go. Only one four loss team (#23 Illinois) was in the rankings this week and with several awful losses the program will likely have to put together a string of strong performances before they can expect to see their name anywhere near the national rankings.

The ACC still has just two teams ranked with Duke at #3 and NC State shooting up to #14 after they defeated the Blue Devils. The future of the ACC looks bright with teams that will soon join the conference all over the board led by #1 Louisville followed by #6 Syracuse, and #20 Notre Dame with Pittsburgh receiving two votes but coming in unranked.

Here’s a look at the AP Top 25 Poll, the USA Today Coaches Poll is not yet available.
