4) UNC 2005 – This team was loaded with talent, consisting of Raymond Felton, Rashad McCants, Jawad Williams, Marvin Williams, and Sean May. The bench included sharpshooter Melvin Scott, Jackie Manuel (2005 Defensive Player of the Year), David Noel, Quentin Thomas, Reyshawn Terry, and current UNC-Greensboro head basketball coach, Wes Miller. This team was dynamic! One of the highlights of this season was the come-from-behind victory against Duke in the Dean Dome. Carolina was trailing by nine points with less than three minutes to go in the game. The 2005 NCAA National Championship was billed with the alleged best team (Illinois) going against the best collection of individual talent (UNC). At 33-1, Illinois was led by Deron Williams, Dee Brown, and Luther Head. Although they were favored to win the national title, UNC won the game. Roy Williams won his first championship on this night. Carolina was powered by Sean May’s outstanding performance, which consisted of him making 10 out of 11 field goals for 26 points to go along with 8 rebounds. Raymond Felton had 17 points and 7 assists. Carolina finished the season at 33-4. Raymond Felton won the Bob Cousy Award for the nation’s top point guard, as well earning third-team Associated Press (AP) all-American honors. Rashad McCants was selected as a third team all-American by the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC). Sean May was an AP, United States Basketball Writer’s Association (USBWA), and Sporting News second team all-American. Marvin Williams, who averaged 11.3 points and 6.6 rebounds per game in 22 minutes off the bench, was chosen as the 2005 ACC Freshman Of The Year and the USBWA Freshman Of The Year. In the 2005 NBA Draft, Marvin was chosen as the #2 overall pick by the Atlanta Hawks. The Charlotte Bobcats selected Raymond Felton #5 overall, and Sean May #13. Rashad McCants was selected #14 overall by the Minnesota Timberwolves.
3) UNC 1982 – This team had a plethora of talent and an outstanding record. This was Dean Smith’s first championship team. The roster included Jimmy Black, Matt Doherty (former UNC coach), Sam Perkins, James Worthy, and Michael Jordan. UNC finished this season with a 32-2 record. The two losses were against Wake Forest (48-55 on January 21, 1982) and Virginia (58-74 on February 3rd, 1982). Although Carolina was lost to Virginia on 2/3/1982, they managed to beat Virginia on January 9ths, 1982 by a score of 65-60, and in the 1982 ACC Championship, 47-45. In the national championship game, North Carolina defeated Georgetown, 63-62. Michael Jordan hit the game-winning shot with 17 seconds left in the game. In the 1982 NBA Draft, UNC power forward James Worthy was selected by the Los Angeles Lakers as the #1 overall pick.
