Two schools of thought have emerged from the disturbing start of the UNC basketball season among fans of the program. One, the sky is falling, Roy Williams isn’t coaching this team correctly and the team simply isn’t good enough to get things done this season. The other, everything is fine, the team will be fine, the Tar Heels are young and just need to figure things out. Roy says that the North Carolina Tar Heels aren’t about to panic, are you?
It’s easy to forget that the 2009 NCAA championship Carolina team dropped its first two conference games. It’s easy to forget that last years team got dismantled in Tallahassee by Florida State, a team that would have had a great chance of winning another title if Kendall Marshall’swrist wouldn’t have broken.
I’m a big believer that every team in every sport every single year no matter how good they are goes through adversity and yes this season is worse than we thought it would have been. So go ahead and place me in second group, one that isn’t panicking just yet and here’s why. This team isn’t struggling because of a lack of talent, this roster has plenty of that, they are struggling to play as a team and execute the system properly.
You might have read that I don’t think this roster is necessarily right for the way Roy likes to run his team I also think it’s obvious this team doesn’t have a leader.
Those things remain true, both the players and the coaches have some major adjusting to do. But let’s not act like we haven’t been here before Tar Heel Nation. Let’s not throw away everything that Roy and his staff have accomplished over the years. Sure it stinks watching this team lose the way they have to Butler, Texas, Indiana and Virginia but let’s not forget that they’ve shown they can beat good teams this year and a quick look at the team stats shows they are capable of running with the big boys they just haven’t put it all together yet. I’m a believer it will happen this season, are you?
