Four Corners: Tar Heels Get Quality Win versus UNLV

1.  Marcus Paige quietly is improving as the UNC point guard. The freshman had twelve points against UNLV and six came from the free throw line.  Fans have looking for Paige to be more aggressive on the offensive side attacking the basket and this is a good sign heading into league play.

Dec 29, 2012 Chapel Hill, NC, USA. North Carolina Tar Heels guard P.J. Hairston (15) and forward James Michael McAdoo (43) celebrate during the second half against the UNLV Runnin

2. PJ Hairston made the most out of his start versus UNLV hitting 5/10 shots for 15 points on the afternoon.  What stood out more than Hairston’s offense was his defense as he was aggressive all game picking up 4 steals.  The Tar Heels need Hairston to play at this level throughout league play to compete for the ACC title.

3. Duke shot 33 free throws to Santa Clara’s 15 during Duke’s 90-77 win and the first half showed how Duke can be a vulnerable number one team.  Duke struggled with Kevin Foster all afternoon as the Santa Clara guard scored 29 points 12-22 shooting.  Duke’s depth will continue to be an area to watch throughout the season and the Blue Devils need more than six points off the bench.

4. Matt Doherty was back in Chapel Hill to watch the Tar Heels for the first time since he was coaching North Carolina in 2003.  Although Doherty did not receive a standing ovation he did receive a warm welcome from the home crowd.  The only thing that could have made this setting any better would have been if ole Doh had been sitting with Rashad McCants.
