UNC was bounced out of this weeks Top 25 polls with votes place them at 27 in the coaches and 31 in the AP after yet another embarrassing performance against Texas before finishing up the week with a win against McNeese State.
The Tar Heels will have plenty of time to climb up the national rankings this season with 19 games left in the regular season and may even be able to squeeze back in if they can pull off a win against 20th ranked UNLV. Carolina plays just one game this week when they face the Runnin’ Rebels on Saturday at the Dean Dome.
Defeating the 11-1 Rebels will be no small task as the Heels will face their toughest competition since suffering the most lopsided loss of the Roy Williams era earlier this season to Indiana. Last season the UNLV handed Carolina their first loss of the season in the Las Vegas Invitational and while this years Tar Heels team isn’t nearly as good as last years version the Rebels have improved.
Even with a win against UNLV the Heels will need some help as every team in the top 25 has two or less losses on their record and of those with two strikes against them none of those teams play anyone of significance. Things do not get any easier for UNC after Saturdays matchup with the Rebels with the start of ACC play coming on January 6th against Virginia.
