UNC Recruiting: UNC Stimulus Package

We’re coming to a close of 2012, football season is finally wrapping up and only a few recruits still remain on the playing field.  Wide receiver Johnathan Howard was the last offensive recruit still playing until a hard fought loss in the semifinals of the GHSA A playoffs.  Howard went out with a bang and proved to the Heels that he is a contender.  With a lanky 6’4 180 pound frame he caught 16 passes for 209 yards. He also returned a kcikoff 86 yards for a touchdown.  Howard has an awesome size and reminds me a lot of UNC star Quinshad Davis.

On the other side of the football Timber Creek Regional High school in Erial, New Jersey has an intimidating D-Line consisting of the bash brothers Gregg Webb and Dejuan Drennon, and YES they are both coming to UNC.  Webb who is at a massive 6’2, 290 clogs the running game and helps fellow defensive end Drennon (6’4, 230) wreck the backfield.  Their defensive prowess helped propel a 57-27 win.  With Tar Heel Sylvester Williams leaving look for those two to help fill the open spot.

Four commits made the All-State team including RB/ATH TJ Logan, WR Jordan Fielleuteau, OL R.J. Prince, and DB Brian Walker.  UNC was also recently eliminated by NC star OL Tyrone Crowder.  In Ohio QB Mitch Trubisky was interviewed by the KeepingitHeel staff which you can find on the site.  Ryan Switzer 2012 season highlights are something to watch.  You can check them out on YouTube.

With football coming to a close, basketball is starting full force.  UNC PF commit Isaiah Hicks is proving he is a top player with a stellar performance of 26 points, 10 rebounds and 8 blocks in his game over the weekend.  Hicks is currently at 19 in the country, but would probably be higher if he chose to play AAU.  Hicks has the potential to average a double double and be a high lottery pick.

Number one overall recruit Andrew Wiggins recently visited Florida State where the Noles showed a terrible performance against the Gators.  With Wiggins being a competitor and a winner, one of the presumed favorites may not be what he is looking for.  Wiggins has not yet set a visit date to Chapel Hill, but is planning on coming in the Spring.

Another big target, 5 star point guard Joel Berry recently tore his meniscus which will sideline him for 4-6 weeks.  Berry has said UNC is a dream school and is looking to visit sometime in January or February.

Isaac Copeland just listed Florida State and Georgetown as his favorites.  It is early in the process and UNC is starting to make a move, I predict an offer soon.  Copeland is an athletic power forward with some range to his shot which has been a valuable asset for Tar Heel bigs in the past. I like Copeland and think he’d add good value to Roy Williams and the Tar Heels.   Another local recruit Shelton Mitchell is emerging as a top point guard and has showed lots of mutual friendship with the Heels, while Mitchell isn’t ranked like Berry and Tyus Jones, look for his rank to shoot up once UNC makes an offer.
