For all the talk about point guards in the 2014 class most of the hype has been around Tyus Jones and Joel Berry which makes sense with Jones being the #1 rated player in the class, Berry a five star stud who has called North Carolina his dream school. Those are the two PGs in the class that Roy Williams has extended offers to become Tar Heels but it’s Shelton Mitchell who has shown the most mutual interest in actually becoming a Tar Heel.
Mitchell is an interesting PG prospect at 6 ft. 4 in. tall he has the ability to slide to the shooting guard spot if UNC finds themselves three deep at the point a real possibility with Marcus Paige’s thin physique may keep him in college for his junior year and beyond and the arrival of Nate Britt in 2013.
Mitchell has visited Chapel Hill several times including at Late Night with Roy where he was the only 2014 prospect and at the UAB game. Roy and assistant coach Hubert Davis also visited with Mitchell on November 25th and also watched him during an open gym on the 14th and had a previous visit with him on October 6th.
Berry plans to visit with Carolina in January or February and obviously has a lot of interest in Carolina, but a player of his caliber may not want to join a program with the possibility of having two other high profile players at the same position. Mitchell doesn’t seem to fit that mold and may end up being the player that fits best.
