UNC Basketball Recruiting: Shelton Mitchell & Tar Heels Showing A lot of Mutual Interest

For all the talk about point guards in the 2014 class most of the hype has been around Tyus Jones and Joel Berry which makes sense with Jones being the #1 rated player in the class, Berry a five star stud who has called North Carolina his dream school.  Those are the two PGs in the class that Roy Williams has extended offers to become Tar Heels but it’s Shelton Mitchell who has shown the most mutual interest in actually becoming a Tar Heel.

Mitchell is an interesting PG prospect at 6 ft. 4 in. tall he has the ability to slide to the shooting guard spot if UNC finds themselves three deep at the point a real possibility with Marcus Paige’s thin physique may keep him in college for his junior year and beyond and the arrival of Nate Britt in 2013.

Mitchell has visited Chapel Hill several times including at Late Night with Roy where he was the only 2014 prospect and at the UAB game.  Roy and assistant coach Hubert Davis also visited with Mitchell on November 25th and also watched him during an open gym on the 14th and had a previous visit with him on October 6th.

Berry plans to visit with Carolina in January or February and obviously has a lot of interest in Carolina, but a player of his caliber may not want to join a program with the possibility of having two other high profile players at the same position.  Mitchell doesn’t seem to fit that mold and may end up being the player that fits best.

I mean I like Mitchell especially his passing ability & seems more likely.Forget that!!! Berry I don’t care if he’s the only recruit we get in 2014…I kid I kid.Seriously Berry you better come to UNC.

This all comes down to who commits first. If Berry in fact concsiders UNC his dream school he should go ahead and commit sooner than later to take all guessing out of the game. If Mitchell is as interested as recent news suggest, then he may beat Berry to the punch and commit first. Personally I dont think UNC could go wrong with either of the two. But I do like Berrys game and his quickness. With the very likelyhood of 3 solid point guards on the roster in 2014-15 and Stillman back from Mission, UNC will be deeper than ever before at the position, and will ahve several options of who would be the best starter. Roy has always liked 3 & 4 yar PGs that develope in his system, and I really like his approach in recruiting such kids. He is building a legit program, starting with the most important position.

I rather have jones! But berry would be alright too! Jones to me is a more complete point guard! Berry might be more college ready cause he already has a college body! But jones is oozing with potential and I see him as a faster and better shooting Kendall Marshall!

I say offer Mitchell and whoever commits first gets the spot. I think it is between Berry and Mitchell.

Yall can stop even bringing up jones he clearly going to Duke of somewhere thats not gonna have an immediate starting spot. he’s that freakin good lol. and Unless Okafor gets some really good pushing from UNC he and jones are not coming to UNC as a tandom. they made it clear thats what they are aiming for and Duke is def in better shape to get both unfortunately. But this dude is a lefty too whats with Roy and lefties suddenly lol
