UNC Basketball Recruiting: 2014 PF Isaac Copeland to Receiver Offer Soon?

Power forward Isaac Copeland is receiving a lot of attention from the North Carolina Tar Heels.  The four star power forward out of Charlottesville, VA  does not have an offer yet from Roy Williams and the Heels but they have been watching him closely.  Copeland visited Chapel Hill in August and described his visit as amazing.  Roy and assistant coach Hubert Davis also stopped by to watch Copeland during a game at The Miller School in Charlottesville, VA.

Copeland is a four star prospect who doesn’t create the type of excitement other big men such as Jahlil Okafor in the class but he represents the type of player Carolina can build around.  UNC is set up very well in the post for the next several years with two high quality big men coming to the program in the 2012 and 2013 classes.

The additions of Brice Johnson, Joel James and the 2013 arrivals of Kennedy Meeks and Isiah Hicks make it hard to imagine a five star, potential one and day type of prospect such as Okafor joining the program where minutes could be limited.  A player like Copeland who can stretch the floor with his three point range, has great leaping ability who looks like he can play a role early in his career yet will need development before moving onto the next level is probably a better fit.

I spoke with Isaac in early September and here’s what he had to say about his visit to Chapel Hill:

My visit was nice I liked every thing I saw and so did my family.  I can really tell that UNC’s program has a lot of tradition and is proud of that tradition.  Also former players are still active in the program which is something I thought was cool as well. For the rest of my conversation with Isaac click HERE.

Copeland fits the type of character and is a nice fit in Carolinas style of play and I expect him to receive a formal offer from UNC soon.  He currently has offers from Appalachian State, Boston College, Buffalo, Charlotte, East Carolina, Fairfield, NC State, St. Joseph’s, Virginia, West Virginia, West Kentucky, Winthrop Houston, Tulsa, Auburn, and Rutgers.

Why settle for a four star when you can get a 5 star? If he is that good he should start right away! Roy has no problem starting freshman ( hansbrough, wright, Ellington ) I know he will help win a lot games but okafor can help when THE GAME! We are UNC and we should not settle for average! That’s what get me going! I know we can’t get every 5 star out there, but why are we not pushing for more! We can get them! The 2007 class had 3 players in the top ten! Wright, Lawson and Ellington !

Its very doubtful that we can even get Okafor. Roy will try I just don’t see it happening.Copeland would be a perfect fit for us.He can develop his game for a few years considering where be so deep with bigs for the next few years.Allows us to focus on top PG,SG,SF

There is a reason that UNC hasn’t gotten the big time guys lately! When is the last time UNC did NOT have a top 10 guy coming in? In back to back recruting classes at that? Not 1 from 2012 or 2013 classes! (seriously can’t see Wiggins coming but who knows) These high level elite guys are looking at how coaches are handling young talent and how they play them! Roy is clearly not as good doing this as Creane, Calipari, even NC States coach lately! only Roy would start freakin Hubert even 1 game lol…would u come to play behind him? or better yet a top SG and play behind Strickland who cant shoot? Players look at this stuff! everybody remembers how long it took to start Marshall over that punk kid. He is tinkering with the line up at the wrong spot! Start Joel James and see how it goes! Start PJ at 2 and watch the court open up b/c he can SHOOT! just my opinion based on the eye tests so far.

sometimes I wonder if people have all forgotten that Roy just pulled 2 five star big men in the 2013 class.

The only consensus five star is hicks , they have Meeks rated as high as 20th on ESPNU and rivals has him in the fifties! But I’m grateful for both! I was just wondering why we were settling for the middle of the pack when we can get the top! I
