Giovani Bernard has a tough decision to make, comeback to Chapel Hill for his junior season or head to the NFL where he would likely be the first running back taken in the draft. A first round picks paycheck or potential glory at North Carolina? Realizing a lifelong dream or a chance to make history for the Tar Heels? Dorm room or new house?
Bernard will be on everybody’s pre-season Heisman list if he chooses to return and has an chance to play in an offense that could be even more dynamic than the one we saw on the field this season. With Bernard UNC would have a ton of playmakers at the skill positions including Eric Ebron, Romar Morris, AJ Blue, Quinshad Davis, Sean Tapley, TJ Thorpe and incoming freshman TJ Logan, Ryan Switzer, Jordan Fieulleteau, Jonathan Howard (and possibly Marquez North).
Gio had a lot of fun this season playing in new head coach Larry Fedoras spread scheme that utilized him not only as a featured runner but a receiver and punt returner as well. Bernard ran for over 1200 yards for the second consecutive season and scored 17 touchdowns despite missing two full games due to injury.
Bernard ranked 11th nationally in rushing, 1st in punt return avg and 4th in all-purpose yardage he doesn’t have anything to prove by coming back to college for another year. If Gio comes back it will be for a chance at the highest individual honor the Heisman and a chance to play in a significant bowl game. This really comes down to whether or not Bernard loves college enough to pass up the money for another year.
