2013 center Kennedy Meeks made his decision tonight on ESPNU and Meeks chose to stay around home and attend the University of North Carolina. Meeks had recently trimmed his list down to UNC and Georgetown after making official visits to both campuses. Meeks also visited Carolina several times on unofficial visits and the combination of his being a local product out of Charlotte and scholarship issues at Georgetown signs pointed to Carolina.
At the same time most recruiting insiders called it too close to call between the Tar Heels and Hoyas. Meeks stated that he would not rush his decision and after careful consideration he decided to announce his decision on national television tonight.
The importance of adding Meeks was greatly intensified as many prospects including Julius Randle, Austin Nichols, Jabari Parker, Troy Williams and Noah Vonleh eliminated UNC from consideration. Meeks was one of just two undecided prospects with offers from Carolina, the other being the top rated player Andrew Wiggins who is not expected to make his decision until the spring.
Meeks stated that he feels like he will be fine once he gets in the conditioning program in terms of keeping up with the Heels running style. He also said that one of the most important things in his decision was Roy Williams and how he and the coaching staff made him understand how much they wanted him and how they would utilize him.
Dave Telep of ESPN now ranks UNC as the #5 overall recruiting class in 2013 with the addition of Meeks.
Keeping It Heel will have much more on this situation and how it will impact the Tar Heels.
