The top rated center in the 2013 class West Charlotte Kennedy Meeks will announce his decision between Georgetown and North Carolina on Friday night ESPNU recruiting special.
Meeks has become a major priority for UNC since Julius Randle, Jabari Parker, Austin Nichols, Troy Williams and Noah Vonleh either eliminated them from consideration or committed elsewhere. Meeks has shown strong interest in Carolina visiting Chapel Hill on at least two different occasions recently. After losing out on several top prospects and going without a commitment yet in 2012, Meeks has turned into a need for UNC.
A versatile player on the offensive end, Meeks has soft hands, can score in the post and can face up. His combination of sheer girth and skill make him a potential match-up nightmare. Even if Meeks cannot get down to an ideal weight by his freshman season, his ability to rebound and own his area of the paint will be valued at the next level. If he chooses Carolina his ability to start the break as an excellent outlet passer will be a big asset.
With the emergence so far of 2012 big men Brice Johnson and Joel James as well as the 2013 arrival of five star power forward Isiah Hicks, the addition of Meeks would secure the Tar Heels terrific depth inside.
Meeks’ situation has been called too close to call between the two programs but given his local ties I give the nod to Carolina and believe he will put on a UNC hat Friday night on ESPN.
