UNC Basketball: A Look at the Soft and Tough Spots on Carolina’s schedule

The North Carolina Tar Heels 2012-2013 schedule isn’t very difficult. It could get harder depending on what happens in the Maui Invitational. Here are some tough and soft games on the Heel’s schedule.

Nov. 9 vs Gardner-Webb

This will be the opener for the Tar Heels . I except some ups and downs during this game because it is a young team. In the end, the Tar Heels should win by 15-20 points at least.

Nov. 19 vs Mississippi State

This is their first game of the Maui Invitational and this is no cupcake. This is a game UNC should win, but if they underestimate them, you never know. Heels should win by 10.

Nov.27 at Indiana

The Heels first huge test on the road and it is against the number one ranked team in the country. Cody Zeller will pose problems for the Tar Heels . Joel James will be up against Zeller, but it might be a bit much to ask him to slow down the preseason All-American. The Tar Heels I believe will suffer their first lost here.

Dec.29 vs UNLV

UNLV game the Tar Heels a surprising lost last season. The Tar Heels will have to deal with one of the best players in the Mountain West in Mike Moser. UNLV is currently ranked 18 in the country and should provide the Heels a good challenge. The Rebels are well coached and have a mix of veteran and talented freshmen.

Jan 26. at NC State

We will finally see if the Wolfpack are for real. They have been beaten by the Tar Heels every time in the 2010s. State is as talented as they have been in maybe 20 years. I’m not a believer in NC State in winning the ACC, but they can prove their doubters wrong with a win over their biggest rival. Anytime UNC goes into Raleigh, I expect a tough game and it is no different here.

Feb.13 at Duke

Best rivalry in college basketball by far. Not really a need to build this game up, but the heels will get to measure themselves against  Coach K and the Blue Devils.

The Tar Heels doesn’t have the toughest schedule in college basketball, but they do have some tough games ahead.

Their schedule was ranked a 9/10 in terms of SOS by ESPN. Surprised Texas isnt even mentioned here considered they could match up with them twice (Maui and Non-conference).

What are your thoughts about who will win the UNLV / UNC game? Its the game I am looking forward to the most. I like this UNC team because of how talented they are on the wings, and I was really happy with how Joel James looked in the exhibition against a good Shaw team. He could be a huge surprise for this team ; not to mention Brice Johnson even looks like he can provide a big boost (I had absolutely zero expectations for him until I watched the exhibition). Desmond Hubert is a decent player, but I wouldnt be surprised if he sees limited minutes again this year. Johnson can really shoot it, and how springy and athletic he is in addition to his obvious clear understanding for how to play the game really impressed me.

Anyways, I think UNC could have done a lot less with the kind of losses they had this year in scheduling teams. This is by no means an easy schedule for a team like this.

This game will be a tight one. Carolina lost last season mainly because I think they were caught off guard at how fast the Rebels ran the floor. This game for UNC will be won behind the three point line. If the Heels can combine for 9 or 10 3′s then they should win with McAdoo down low.
