The top point guard in the 2014 class Tyus Jones cut his list down to his final eight and North Carolina is still amongst the programs he is considering. Jones listed Baylor, Duke, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan State, Minnesota, Ohio State and UNC.
Jones recently visited Chapel Hill with fellow prospects Jahlil Okafor and Theo Pinson during a trip in which the trio also visited arch rival Duke. With Andrew Wiggins reclassifying to the 2013 class, Jones moved up to the #1 spot overall in the 2014 class rankings.
I believe it will be very tough for UNC to land Jones whom was the first PG Roy Williams offered in the class. Marcus Paige on board and Nate Britt already committed in the 2013 class. Meaning Jones would likely be looking at a role off Carolinas bench as a freshman, something he may not want to do as the top point in the class.
I love Jones’ game, when I watch him, I can’t help thinking about Tony Parker the entire time. He’s very mature and has a high basketball IQ and makes very few mistakes on the floor. He isn’t known as a big time scorer and he doesn’t wow you with his athleticism, he’s the perfect, steady leader who does it all on the court. Jones was offered by Carolina on August 3rd.
Jones has been closely tied to Okafor as the AAU teammates have stated their desire to play together at the next level. I tend to not put much stock in these package duo scenarios that seem to pop up every year (see Cat Barber and Troy Williams). Some talks have even spread that Pinson is considering joining the duo into a triple package. While Jones released his top eight, no word yet on if that is also Okafors final eight.
