Tonight the UNC Men’s Soccer Team played at home to Boston College. This match was the last match of the regular season for the Heels, and was also the last ACC regular season match. The Tar Heels won by a score of 4-0, exiting the regular season on good form and with plenty of confidence for next week’s ACC Tournament. The win, combined with Maryland’s loss tonight to Wake Forest, means that the Tar Heels will draw level on points with the Terrapins and share the ACC Regular Season Crown. The Eagles from Boston College were never a match for the Heels, and thus the Tar Heels were able to jump out of the gate and play their favorite style, holding possession for long stretches and pressuring the BC defense constantly. Throughout the game the Tar Heels had so much control that they only needed to call on their goalkeeper Scott Goodwin once.
It didn’t take long for Tar Heel Pressure to result in a goal. The deadlock was broken when the post helped Andy Craven get his shot around the BC keeper and into the back of the net. The Heels kept their tactical advantage throughout the game and went in at the half leading by a goal.
In the 54th minute, a free kick allowed Danny Garcia to double the UNC advantage, with his lifted ball sneaking over the keeper and into goal. The Heels iced the game with two goals in three minutes between the 79th and 82nd minutes. Andy Craven added an assist to his goal when he slotted a pass for Alex Olofson to fire home, and Raby George scored off an Olofson corner directed by Craven.
The ACC tournament will take place this next week, and the Tar Heels have the advantage as second overall seed. The top four seeds in the tournament get the home field advantage in the first round, before the competition moves to Germantown, Maryland. The next game for the Heels will be on Tuesday, November 6th at 7:00. The Heels will be playing at home to Duke. TV viewing will be announced soon, but as always we’ll have you covered here at KeepingItHeel.
