The shock waves that were sent through Tar Heel Nation when news trickled out yesterday that top prep star Andrew Wiggins had a visit with UNC and actually wanted the Tar Heels to more actively recruit him (along with a few other programs) wasn’t much of a surprise after all.
Wiggins’ high school coach Rob Fulford told SNY.tv that aside from Kentucky and Florida State, Carolina has been the most consistent bidder for Wiggins’ services all along. Not only that, the trip to watch Wiggins, has been in the plans.
“They’ve been probably the most consistent of the other group,” Fulford said. “They’ve called quite a bit. They call and check on him. Coach Williams was set to come in early in the period. Obviously, he has health issues so this is just the first chance he’s had to come out. But they were planning on coming anyway.
“Carolina has consistently been there.”
Rumors were all over the place yesterday as to what type of visit this was with Carolina today. It was rumored to be an in home visit but has since been confirmed that Roy and his staff will watch Wiggins workout today.
Wiggins has still not decided whether or not he will reclassify to the 2013 class. Seen as the best prep player regardless of class, Wiggins has to reclassify by November 1st if he wants to play in the McDonalds All-American game.
“I just don’t think he wants to decide,” Fulford said.
“Obviously, we’ve given our opinion. We think from a basketball standpoint, he doesn’t need another year, but that’s not for me to decide.”
As things open up in the Wiggins recruitment, it’s huge that Carolina has been there the whole time. Fulford stated last month that Carolina has in fact offered Wiggins and did so over a year ago.
