UNC Football: Could the Tar Heels Have Been 6-0 Part 2?

The past week I have had several conversations about many different things. One conversation I had that caught my attention is one that I had with my grandfather and Matt Hamm. Could North Carolina realistically still be undefeated right now?

Now don’t laugh at the suggestion they could realistically be 6-0! Let’s think about it. The two games we lost…were lost by very little.

Now my argument is that Gio Bernard makes all the difference in the world. Since he’s been back…look at what he has done. He’s just run all over the opponent’s defenses. He made Virginia Tech look almost as bad as Elon.

Had Bernard not been injured, our rushing game would have been even better and helped out in getting more points on the board. Now I’m not dissing AJ Blue or Romar Morris. Both are very talented and contribute to one of the best trio of running backs in the NCAA. However, Gio is THE running back and is rightfully so for a reason. Give Blue or Morris some more experience and there is no doubt that they can play on Bernard’s level too.

Another argument that was brought up was the penalties and how many we have had. I believe the number one reason we’ve taken ourselves out of contention is the penalties.

Now, I am not sure if it’s just sloppy playing, or if maybe Coach Fedora is rushing his playing styles in too fast for these guys to get an understanding of it, but we’re committing far too many false start penalties in addition to some other ridiculous ones.

I firmly believe if even without Bernard had we not made so many careless penalties, this team would undefeated still. With Bernard, we’d be undefeated. The Tar Heels are the best team in the Coastal division, but whether they learn how to correct this issue will eventually show and that will determine exactly where we rank in the ACC.
