The top two prospects in the 2014 class, center Jahlil Okafor and point guard Tyus Jones just happen to be great friends. They have proclaimed that they intend on going to the same college and thus far, are backing up that statement by scheduling visits together. According to his blog, Okafor says he and Jones will not be able attend any events this week but is heading out to Duke next week with Jones.
He goes on by saying that sometime during that visit they will also stop by Chapel Hill and check out UNC. Okafor said he sent a text message to North Carolina Tar Heels head coach Roy Williams wishing him a speedy recovery and hoped he would get to see him during his visit.
The Tar Heels have had to send assistant coaches to workouts and in-home visits since Roy’s kidney surgery has restricted his ability to travel for the time being. Previously, Roy told Okafor that he wanted him at UNC so much, that he was one of two people in Chicago with his office phone number, the other, Michael Jordan.
Another encouraging statement Okafor made was that although he is friends with fellow Chicago area prospect Jabari Parker, they don’t talk about recruiting anymore. Could that be a sign that Okafor is considering reclassifying to the 2013 class like fellow star Noah Vonleh recently did? That’s the first thing that came to my mind when I read that they used to discuss going to the same program together, Parker is an obvious one and done.
Getting Jones and Okafor would be a huge get for Carolina in the 2014 class. Both are special players and consensus five star prospects who can step in and play right away at any program in the nation.
