UNC Basketball Recruiting: Shelton Mitchell Visits Carolina

Class of 2014 point guard Shelton Mitchell visited Chapel Hill today to look at the North Carolina Tar Heels as a potential destination.  Head coach Roy Williams has been very aggressive in his pursuit of PGs in the 2014 class.  Offers have been made to Tyus Jones and Joel Berry and the Heels have showed a lot of interest in Mitchell of late.

UNC was burnt this past season by their lack of depth at the PG position when shooting guard Dexter Strickland who was serving double duty as the backup PG to starter Kendall Marshall was injured and Marshall was also injured in the post season. The Heels lost Marshall to the NBA Draft and will be in the exact same position in 2012.

The situation gets a lot better in 2013 with Nate Britt joining 2012 freshman Marcus Paige in Chapel Hill. Roy must be convinced that at least one of those points will be gone by 2014, he seems bent on adding another floor general in 2014.

Mitchell is a consensus four star prospect out of Waxhaw, NC. Personally, I like Tyus Jones the best out of all the PGs in the 2014 class. Jones is the #2 overall rated prospect and the fact that he and center Jahlil Okafor have been saying they want to go to the same school makes him all that more attractive.

But landing Mitchell would be extra special given his Carolina roots. So my brain might tell me to root for Jones, but my heart knows how special it would be to land Mitchell, Theo Pinson and maybe even the Martin brothers.

Mitchell is a true leader on the court, a floor general and unselfish player who does the little things and can be counted on to make good decisions on the court. It’s early in the process but make no mistake, Mitchell is no consolation prize.
