North Carolina Tar Heels head basketball coach Roy Williams recently underwent successful surgery to remove a tumor in his kidney that was later revealed to be benign or non-cancerous. Roy was in attendance for the Tar Heels most recent football game against the Idaho Vandals in Kenan Stadium.
Coach was in high spirits during a halftime interview he talked about how blessed he was to make it through surgery healthy. He stated that he intends to not miss anytime as Carolinas head coach. He also joked that during his down time his wife discovered that he needs to be the head coach for a long, long time.
Coach is notorious for being a person who is very restless and needs to keep working. I’ve heard him in interviews say that he has not slept past 9am in 20+ years. When news broke of the surgery, several former and current UNC players joked that during his downtime, Roy would come up with practice and game strategies for the entire season.
A lot of talk about who should succeed Roy as Carolinas head coach started to come out in light of his recent surgery. ESPN stated that they believe Hubert Davis was brought in for just this reason. Keeping It Heel weighed in and offered some different possibilities as well.
I think it’s all premature. Sure it’s great to have a backup plan and I hope the University has worked with Roy on one, just in case. But anyone who has listed to Roy Williams speak about his plans for the future and how much he loves the University of North Carolina. Maybe Davis was brought in to eventually be Carolinas new head man, but I think that is a plan for the distant future, not one we will see happen anytime soon.
