UNC Football: Who's Really the Tar Heels #1 Receiver?

Coming into the season, the receiver group was projected to be one of the weaker units for the North Carolina Tar Heels.  Thus far this season the group has produced above most expectations.  The depth of the unit was a particular concern with the loss of Dwight Jones and the injury to TJ Thorpe.  So far this season quarterback Bryn Renner has had solid contributions from many different UNC pass catchers.

The question is, who’s UNCs #1 receiver?  Erik Highsmith, Sean Tapley, Quinshad Davis or is it tight end Eric Ebron or even running back Romar Morris?  The Heels have spread the ball around this season and had some big performances from all five.  Highsmith leads the team with 22 receptions and 243 yards, but Ebron leads the team with three touchdown catches.

Tapley’s 60 yard catch and run for a TD gave the Heels the momentum for the rest of the contest against ECU this past weekend.  Davis has shown that he not only has big time potential but the ability to make some big plays as a freshman, earning him regular playing time.  And Morris earned the ACCs receiver of the week award after his big time performance against Louisville.

It’s easy to tap Highsmith as the guy with eight more receptions than the next guy in line, TE Ebron.  But my choice is the explosive TE, although he has less receptions and yards than Highsmith, he’s the guy that creates the most problems for opposing defenses.  I’ve wrote before that head coach Larry Fedora and the offensive coaching staff need to make more of a concerted effort to get Ebron more involved in the offense.

Ebron is the teams most explosive option in the passing game and provides more than just a security blanket for Renner with his big play ability and tremendous athleticism for a player his size.  He is the Tar Heels #1 receiver in my eyes, how about yours?
