UNC Basketball Recruiting: Roy Williams After 2014 PGs

Early in the recruiting season the Keeping It Heel staff debated the strategy on recruiting a point guard in the 2014 class.  Roy Williams already has two outstanding talents at the point in incoming freshman Marcus Paige and Nate Britt in 2013.

With Garner Webb transfer Luke Davis in hand and Stillman White returning from his mission in 2014, the urgency around obtaining a high end PG didn’t appear to be a high priority.  Over the last week the Tar Heels have blown that theory into pieces with offers to Tyus Jones, the top PG in the class and Joel Berry III.

The Heels were caught with their pants down so to speak with a complete lack of depth at the position at the most critical time of the season, resulting in an Elite 8 loss to Kansas.  Roy appears to be on a mission to prevent that from ever happening again. UNC fans have been clamoring for a Berry offer.  A fan of the program growing up, Berry has become a fan favorite, especially after his impressive showing against Julius Randle on ESPN in July.

UNC is up to 10 or 11 offers (depending on the Jahlil Okafor situation) after offering Jones and Berry between the 2013 and 2014 classes.  UNC has been extremely aggressive pursuing the top talents in the country and offers have come in bunches this summer.  August is typically a very exciting time in the recruiting world.  Coaches are rounding out their offers, players are cutting lists, some are finally making decisions and others are setting timelines for future decisions.

Both players fit Carolinas system very well.  I like Jones’ game more and as the top PG in the class and the one who got the first offer he is the top target at the position.  But he’s also the tougher get of the two players (more on that tomorrow) and with Paige and Britt already lined up, it’s going to take a perfect storm to get Jones to Chapel Hill.  As for Berry, I don’t think a decision will come immediately, but I don’t think he will end up taking the offer to play for his favorite team.

Which PG do you think will commit to Carolina in the 2014 class?
