Roy Williams has been a busy man lately, and most of his activities are focused on big men in the 2013 class. With Isiah Hicks already committed, Roy has offered Julius Randle, Kennedy Meeks, and Austin Nichols so far.
Roy has also been watching Marcus Lee and Jermaine Lewis closely and offers to those two could come at any time. Despite the arrivals of Brice Johnson and Joel James in with the 2012 class, Roy still has a lot of building to do inside after the losses of John Henson and Tyler Zeller.
With the expected departure of James Michael McAdoo after the upcoming season, Carolina as it stands now will be in dire need of depth. Theoretically, Hicks right now would be the closest thing to a star player when McAdoo leaves Chapel Hill. James and Johnson are not seen as players who will be ready to be feature players on the offensive end in 2013.
Randle is the top priority in the 2013 class, has been since the beginning, Roy has been targeting Randle since his sophomore season and made him one of the first offers in the class. Randle’s AAU and high school coaches both have a great relationship with Roy and the UNC coaching staff and Randle was recently quoted as saying he could really see himself in Carolina Blue.
But even if Roy lands the #2 rated player in the class, Randle is a likely one and done player, Hicks is a guy with such a high ceiling and improvement over the last year he could also end up gone after just one season. So Roy must build some depth in the 2013 class.
Another contributing factor to the focus on the inside is the current depth at other positions. With Marcus Paige already on campus and Nate Britt committed to the 2013 class, point guard is sealed up. On the perimeter the current depth will make it very hard for any one player to separate himself enough from the pack and build up his draft stock to leave early. In my view, Roy is quite confident he will have most, if not all of his perimeter players from the 2012 team back in 2013.
It was widely believed that Nichols was Duke bound before his father came out and said that UNC was amongst the top three or so schools pushing the most for his sons services. Meeks wants to decide before his high school season begins and says UNC is going hard after him right now along with several others.
It will be interesting to see how long Roy waits before he makes his next move. Several top prospects should make their intentions known between now and September. Will Roy wait for the dominoes to fall before he makes an offer to players like Marcus Lee and Jermaine Lewis?
