QB Mitch Trubisky picked the North Carolina Tar Heels over Ohio State and Alabama. As the seventh ranked QB prospect in the 2013 class, a perfect fit for Larry Fedoras offense. A dual threat, shotgun passer with a tremendous arm and a combination of size, speed and athleticism to run Fedoras spread to perfection.
Since his commitment, Trubisky has been called the perfect QB for Fedora in Carolina. How soon can Mitch make an impact on the field for UNC? Pretty fast actually, he will arrive in 2013, current starter Bryn Renners senior season. In 2014 the QB situation looks wide open with Trubisky likely set to dual with Marquis Williams for the job.
Williams is a heck of an athlete in his own right with a cannon arm. He’s not threat to Renner this year, but if he can put those physical tools together, he could make it an interesting battle in 2014. Right now Trubisky is the better passer, both in the pocket and on the run.
The Tar Heels will likely utilize their QB different once Renner moves on. A decent athlete, Renner will move around and run with the football more often than he ever has now that he’s running Fedoras spread. But he’s not going to turn into Michael Vick overnight. He’s the best QB on the roster for now and Fedora will work with what he’s got.
When it’s time for the next generation to take over, the staff will have a chance to open things up a little more. It’s going to take a pretty big transformation from Marquis Williams for him to become a better true QB option over Trubisky. But 2014 is a long ways away and anything can happen, especially for an athlete like Williams.
Ultimately, Trubisky was recruited to come to Chapel Hill and be a starter one day, not sit the bench. I can see Fedora easing the sophomore Trubisky into the role in 2014. Going with a dual QB system, starting Trubisky and playing him more. But taking him out in favor of the more athletic and explosive Williams in spots throughout the game.
The Tar Heels staff has done a great job of recruiting in both the state of North Carolina and outside the state. The 2013 class is shaping up to be the very best UNC class in a long, long time. Getting Trubisky not only solidifies this class but legitimizes the efforts of the new regime. Everything runs off the QB, both on and off the field. Top offensive prospects can now commit to Carolina knowing they have a top tier QB prospect on the way. Another sign that things are turning around for UNC Football.
