The Diamond Heels bounced back this past week and are back on a roll, undefeated since the three game sweep at the hands of the Miami Hurricanes last weekend. UNCs offense was in flux scoring just three runs in the ugly series against Miami that resulted in the Heels losing five spots in the national rankings going from third in the nation to eighth.
After a three day break Mike Fox and company came back rejuvenated and are winners of the last five going into Wednesday night. UNC is still without their top hitter in third baseman Colin Morin who remains out with a broken hand. North Carolinas pitching has been its crutch all season long. It’s offensive surge over the past week was coupled with the continued dominance of the pitching staff which posted a 3.2 ERA in the last week.
The Heels offense has produced two ten run games in the last six contests. With an average of 6.6 runs per game, the Heels have all three phases pitching, defense and hitting, a rarity this season. After sweeping #23 Virginia the Heels climbed to #6 in the nation. This week the Heels head into a five game home stand against Georgia Tech in a three game series, then single matchups against UNC Greensboro and East Carolina.
With the season coming to a close. Carolina needs to continue to hitting the ball if they want to find their way back to the College World Series.
