Oh please oh please Gods of College Basketball let it happen! After two phenomenal regular season contests and a series split, I need it. Aside from Duke’s improbable, wouldn’t happen again if we played the game a million times comeback in the first game, Carolina crushed Duke this year. And I want Tar Heel Nation to have a chance to prove that to the world, especially stupid Dook fans.
UNC destroyed Duke on Saturday night winning by 18, the largest margin of victory since 1989. You couldn’t ask for a better basketball game as a Carolina fan. The entire starting five scores at least twelve points. Your point guard who is supposed to be your scoring weak link, leads you with 20 points. Everyone steps up and plays terrific perimeter defense and shuts down a great shooting Blue Devil team. The Tar Heels not only evened the score with their arch rival. They captured the ACC Conference championship and a #1 seed in the upcoming conference tournament. All is right in the world, but it’s March, and things could get even better.
Getting blown out at home by Carolina hurts the Blue Devils chances at a #1 seed in the NCAA no matter what happens in Atlanta. None of the other contenders have suffered that kind of loss at home. Now that the regular season is over Tar Heel fans, it’s time for us to root for Duke, but just for a little while. Before you freak out, let me explain. You see, we need Duke to pick themselves up and get to the ACC Tournament championship game. Why? So we can beat them again that’s why. Sure, winning both the ACC regular season and tournament championships would be great regardless of whatever team we face in the tourney’s title game. Ask yourself, how sweet would it be to go in and beat Duke again? On a neutral floor, tournament setting, it’s the prefect precursor to the big dance. And maybe even more importantly, it’s the perfect statement to make to the selection committee.
The Tar Heels are peaking at just the right time. Defensively they played better as a team on the perimeter than they have all season long. The first half was the most complete half of basketball against a good team as they have had all season. The offensive attack was perfectly balanced and they withstood a couple Duke surges in the second half and still blew them out on their home court. It’s March and the tuneups are over, every game now is all about one thing, cutting down the nets. All season long the idiots that vote for the Top 25 (especially the ESPN poll) have unfairly ranked the Heels below inferior teams like Michigan State and Kansas. Despite a big time, statement win like this, don’t put it past the selection committee to give UNC an unfair seed. The Heels need to force their hands, and to do that, they need to crush Duke, again in the ACC conference tournament championship game.
