UNC Basketball: What’s not to love?

by ACC Basketball

Okay, let’s make this clear; I am a die hard North Carolina fan. Everything North Carolina I follow. I tend to lean towards Football and Basketball more than all others. Winning seasons are typical in basketball. Not so much Football, but times are changing in that sport. Back to my topic at hand. The game against Duke last night.

I am not going to quote statistics from the game, just my personal unbiased opinion. See, I have a talent. I can take any sport, put my favorite team into the equation and still make an unbiased analysis. I can also be very biased, depending on the circumstances.  About last night, North Carolina played phenomenal. I can’t take anything from those guys. I have a few concerns that I will address in a moment.

Duke’s shooting. They shot so well last night. I guess I can’t really say it was unbelievable. This is what Duke is all about. They always keep a rack of good shooters. Last night Duke played like the Duke team I have grown to hate. Excellent shooting always does it for them. This year, their shooting has not been up to standards. Duke standards that is. I am at a loss of words when I think about Austin Rivers. This kid is amazing, I think he will return to school. Which makes Duke even scarier next year.

Reggie Bullock. I think I have been stressing this point over and over. This jud needs to be more involved. It is not his fault at all. They need to run plays for him. He is your best shooter, but the bigs are down in the paint not even paying attention to the open man. I am so glad we have Kendall Marshall. This seems to be the only “pass first” player on our team. This is College Basketball. Tyler Zeller and Harrison Barnes should not be scoring close to 30 a piece. That is absurd. Look for the open man.
Defense. North Carolina’s Defense is horrifying. That is no surprise. I guess, when it comes down to it, they really do not need much

Defense. The scoring is what wins the games for us. However, on the final play of the game, you need to be in the face of the kid who has completely exposed the Defense all game. He shouldn’t be able to breathe. For Rivers to be able to get off that shot with a seven footer in Zeller out there is unacceptable. You can make the argument that it wasn’t Zeller’s fault. Really though, it was. He should not have been playing the least bit off of that kid. Yeah, he got his hand up, but the damage was done.

The number one situational rule in College Basketball is if you have the last possession and the chance to win or tie on the opposing teams home floor, you go for the win. You get out of there, you do not want to take the game into overtime. That is just College Basketball 101. For Zeller to allow that to happen makes me question the decision making of the team. I have all confidence that we will get it together, however that game was a pride hit. We need to bounce back and bounce back strong.
